Owl Tag Toy Pattern and Tutorial

I was going to make a tag blanket for my new little one, but I then I decided to create this owl tag toy instead.  It’s small enough to take anywhere and made out of super soft fleece and flannel (or anything you choose).  You can attach toys or teething rings to the ribbons or add a rattle inside to customize.  They are easy to make and would make a great handmade baby gift.  They are also a great way to use up fabric scraps.

I like to print the pattern pieces on card stock.  Cut out each piece.

Cut pieces of fabric large enough to fit the coordinating pattern pieces on.  For all pieces except the owl body, iron on a piece of fusible web about the same size as the fabric using the package instructions.

Trace the pattern pieces onto the paper side of the fusible web.

Cut out all of your pieces.

Peel the paper backing off and place your pattern pieces where you want them.  Whatever looks good to you!  Iron on pieces one at a time using the directions on the fusible web package.

Sew around each piece.  I used a straight stitch about a 1/4″ from the edge, but you could get fancy and use a zigzag stitch.

Decide where you would like the tags.  I cut my ribbon about 5″ long which resulted in about 2″ loops when finished, but you can adjust however you like.  Pin them down as shown.  I sewed each one on just to make sure they were secure.

Place both sides of the owl right sides together and pin.

Sew around the owl using a 3/8″ seam allowance.  Leave a 2″ gap open on the side.  Turn the owl right side out and poke out the ears with a point turner or pencil.  You can sew it up flat or add some Poly-fil and sew up the gap.
